The SEC's Division of Corporation Finance issued a no-action letter on Nov. 3 concluding that Canton Coin (CC), the native token of the Canton Network, is a digital commodity rather than a security. Staff said it will not recommend enforcement action, citing that CC derives its value from the network's programmatic operation and supply-and-demand dynamics — not expectations of profit from the managerial efforts of others — and that the network has no central party.
The letter rests on the SEC's digital-asset interpretation covering decentralization and the digital-commodity designation, and it states an enforcement position only, reaching no legal conclusion on the token's status. It also addresses the minting of CC by the network's super validators, validators and applications under that framework.
