The Commodity Futures Trading Commission's Market Oversight Division issued an advisory to designated contract markets flagging the risks of "mention markets" — prediction contracts that settle on whether a specific person says a particular word or phrase. Staff warned such contracts are more susceptible to manipulation because settlement turns on the discrete conduct of an individual that may be neither independently generated nor externally verifiable, and said they can be listed only in limited circumstances.
The advisory is the latest step in the CFTC's broader scrutiny of prediction platforms as it works on new event-contract rules, following earlier reviews of mention-style products and the sector's rapid growth.
