Mastercard and Cloudflare enter agentic payments via Coinbase's x402
Coinbase announced it is helping Mastercard and Cloudflare move into agentic payments. Mastercard opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines, a system that lets AI agents discover services, agree to terms, and pay for them within human-set spending limits, following pilots with Coinbase, Base and Cloudflare.
- A live demo at Cloudflare Connect had an AI agent pay a service provider over Coinbase's x402 protocol with Base as the on-chain settlement network
- Mastercard's pilot agent bought services within a budget set by a human operator, completing nine payments across providers
- Cloudflare separately added x402 support to its Agents SDK and MCP servers and is co-launching the x402 Foundation with Coinbase
The moves extend adoption of Coinbase's agentic-payments standard beyond its own products into major payments and internet-infrastructure players.
