Superchain Upgrade 16a is pending governance approval for rollout on Sep 22 (Sepolia) and Oct 2 (Mainnet).
This maintenance upgrade replaces U16 with a more cautious approach:
- Removes withdrawal-proving logic from production based on partner feedback
- Introduces system-level feature toggles via SystemConfig for per-chain flexibility
- Adds development feature flags for testing interop features safely
Key improvements:
- ETHLockbox becomes first toggle-controlled feature
- Chains on U15 can upgrade directly to U16a
- U16 chains can transition seamlessly
