Nillion winds down L2 as Blacklight moves to Ethereum L1
Nillion is winding down its L2 chain in the coming weeks now that Nillion runs on Ethereum mainnet, where the Blacklight L1 mainnet goes live on October 5. After an earlier message sparked concern, the team clarified this is a simple maintenance step: anyone holding NIL or ETH on the L2 should move them to Ethereum L1 before the shutdown. It also confirmed it will keep building the Encrypted Markets, with phase 1 now live on mainnet and a full roadmap shared.
What changes on L1:
- Minimum stake stays at 70,000 NIL; rewards come from 0.5% annual compounding inflation plus trigger fees
- Operators need ETH for gas; mainnet nodes require a fresh registration
- Covenant mechanics: each node holds one encrypted share, and when a condition triggers, nodes publish their shares onchain to reveal the payload
- Managed node participants can migrate too — unstake from L2, withdraw NIL, bridge to Ethereum, and stake via the managed-nodes app
- New operators can already test Blacklight L1 on Sepolia before mainnet
