LayerZero Research paper challenges slashing as PoS security backstop
LayerZero Research published a new paper, Too Late to Slash, arguing that slashing does not reliably back the security of proof-of-stake blockchains.
- The paper challenges the premise that slashing removes the free option validators have to test whether enough peers are willing to attack — by making the act of coordinating an attack itself economically risky.
- The researchers show rational validators can determine whether enough others are willing to attack before producing any slashable evidence: if there aren't enough participants, nothing happens, and if there are, the coalition only equivocates once it is confident an attack will succeed.
