Ethereum Name ServiceENSv2 to raise .eth prices and cut grace period to 28 days
ENS detailed the pricing and grace-period changes arriving with ENSv2. The annual price for 5+ character names rises from $5 to $8, while base prices for 3- and 4-character names stay unchanged. A new multi-year discount applies across all name lengths: 12.5% off for 2 years, ~31% off for 3–5 years, ~44% off for 6+ years, calculated on the years added in a single registration or renewal transaction — so 6 years on a 5+ name costs $27 (about $4.50/year) versus $8 for one year.
- The grace period for expired names drops from 90 days to 28 days; under ENSv2, names in grace won't resolve, can't be transferred, and their records can't be edited, but can be recovered by renewing at the normal price.
- Names migrating to ENSv2 get 62 days added to their expiration date to preserve the original grace-period end, so existing holders don't lose time.
- The changes passed an ENS DAO social vote and are bundled into the executable proposal the DAO is now voting on to activate ENSv2 on mainnet (thread).

- The grace period is changing too. Today, an expired name enters a 90-day grace period. It continues to resolve and its records can still be edited, but it can’t be transferred or registered by anyone else. Replying to their earlier post: What does that mean in practice? For a 5+ character name: • 1 year: $8 • 6 years: $27, or $4.50/year • 10 years: $45, or $4.50/year Longer registration and renewal terms mean a lower effective annu…
Ethereum Name Service
The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a distributed, open, and extensible naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain.
ENS’s job is to map human-readable names like ‘alice.eth’ to machine-readable identifiers such as Ethereum addresses, other cryptocurrency addresses, content hashes, and metadata. ENS also supports ‘reverse resolution’, making it possible to associate metadata such as canonical names or interface descriptions with Ethereum addresses.
ENS has similar goals to DNS, the Internet’s Domain Name Service, but has significantly different architecture due to the capabilities and constraints provided by the Ethereum blockchain. Like DNS, ENS operates on a system of dot-separated hierarchical names called domains, with the owner of a domain having full control over subdomains.
Top-level domains, like ‘.eth’ and ‘.test’, are owned by smart contracts called registrars, which specify rules governing the allocation of their subdomains. Anyone may, by following the rules imposed by these registrar contracts, obtain ownership of a domain for their own use. ENS also supports importing in DNS names already owned by the user for use on ENS.
