A proposal has been made to update Metamask to support separate fee structures for execution and data fees on Layer 2 blockchains like Scroll and Optimism. Currently, Metamask only supports this fee separation for Optimism and Base. The proposed update aims to systematically address this issue for multiple Layer 2 chains simultaneously, allowing transactions on these chains to benefit from reduced data fees introduced by Ethereum Improvement Proposal 4844.

In fact, there are already many L2s that have separate fee structures for execution fee and data fee, including Scroll and OP stack chains. With the 4844 data blobs, the separation fee for execution and data makes more sense as L2 txs can benefit directly from the fee reduction

Because there is no widely adopted L2 gas fee standard, each L2 builds something slightly different and is a pain for, e.g. wallets. Breaking EVM is a big decision which is why, for now, Linea kept its pricing to the L1 spec and manages multi-dimensional fees under the hood
