Artist John Gerrard has released the second installment of his SPIRITS series at LACMA, continuing his 25-year practice of creating digital simulations that examine our world through the lens of entertainment, industry, and warfare software.
Building on Previous Work
SPIRITS follows Gerrard's earlier Art Blocks series:

These works use spatial and solar data to create WebGL environments where dawn and dusk occur accurately for specific locales throughout the year.
Thematic Focus
The series explores nations' oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, a subject central to Gerrard's artistic practice since its inception. Through programmable, on-chain generative content, each piece offers a unique commentary on environmental impact and resource use.
